Kākāriki are being seen in Medlands regularly at the moment!
Red crowned kākāriki have been spotted and heard in Medlands over winter and early spring. These endemic green parrots are very special indeed and have up to now mostly been seen in Okiwi and surrounds on Aotea, but we have all our fingers crossed that they have decided Medlands is not a bad spot to settle down and start a family.
They have certain requirements to feel welcome, much like any other property hunter. Fresh water near their chosen accomodation is a must, both for drinking and bathing. A nice sheltered spot and a cavity in a solid tree (eg Puriri), some open grass land to hop around and feed on is also high on the list and most importantly good food source and of course a tight predator control programme. Not too much to ask, is it?
Not sure what they sound like? Listen to this: https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/conservation/native-animals/birds/bird-song/red-crowned-parakeet-song-4.mp3
Their chatter is very characteristic and unlike all the other bird sounds in Medlands, so sharpen your ears when out and about.
We would love to hear all about it if you have spotted or heard a kākāriki in Medlands and of course photos are always welcome.
